live music

Great music and Sam Shepard fit together like a cowboy in his saddle. With this in mind we’ve partnered with Cameron House, one of Toronto’s great music venues and designated Cam House our official post- show hang- out spot. Come down every night of the fest and share a whiskey or two with us, and hear some great live music acts. Also keep an ear out for the new music in Pomme Grenade’s production of Cowboy Mouth, written by Gentleman Reg.

(live music from 10pm, pwyc)

DARREN EEDENS, May 1st

Darren Eedens will be playing at the Cameron House the night of our opening on May 1 st! He is a bluegrass musician who plays the banjo, the guitar, and the mandolin (but sometimes not.) In 2009 he released his first album Owl; and Other Birds of Prey, and has been touring alone and with other Canadian artists since.

TAYLOR KNOX, May 2nd

Taylor is a drummer who has played with many major Canadian artists, but in 2008 became a solo act with the release of his Moby-Dick inspired EP Lookings. He and his band have just released two singles, “Fire” and “Nothing is Impossible,” tunes with a groovy, retro flare, evocative of one Mr. Shepard riding into the sunset on a horse, or a motorcycle, or possibly just walking (after midnight) in some good old-fashioned cowboy boots.

KAYLA HOWRAN, May 3rd

Kayla Howran is a a country singer, but don’t be mistaken, she’s got the rustic Shepard-era sound that only Cameron House Records themselves could evoke. She’s been compared to the likes of Loretta Lynn and her music akin to that performed way-back at the Grand Ole’ Opry. $20 for whoever can find a picture of Shepard at the Opry in the 70s!

COLONEL TOM AND THE AMERICAN POUR, May 4th

This band is an old-school country band. And they are the real deal. They are comprised of an incredible pool of talent, helmed by Colonel Thomas Clark Parker, and they play classic country. They describe themselves as a “[s]hit kicking honky tonking swinging country band”. Well, if that doesn’t sum up Sam Shepard, I don’t know what does.

THE CAMERON BROTHERS BAND, May 5th

The Cameron Brothers Band, formed by Scott and Braden Cameron, and probably no relation to the House, will make you think that Neil Young and his contemporaries have joined in on the Sam Shepard celebrations. On December 5th, they released their album Ratios and the influence of their upbringing across Ontario is more than apparent.

CHRIS WEATHERSTONE, May 6th

Is an old friend of the project!

RUN WITH THE KITTENS, May 7th

For the last night of our festival, the Cameron House will be featuring a band who have been described as “Canada’s most entertaining live act” and their performances “…raucous, in your face rock…and over the top, jaw-dropping.” Phew, what a way to close out the week! Well, we all knew Mr. Shepard liked to have a rollicking good time, so let’s pay our final homage to him the best way we can think of: watching theatre, listening to a kick-ass band at our local watering hole, and having one too many whiskey sours.
